How do I sign my child up for Sankofa STEM Academy?

Sankofa STEM Academy is open to students currently in 5th grade through high school.

We give first priority to students we serve in our other programs—Kids Count, S.A.G.E., STEM Scholars, and STEM Scholars 2.0—as well as those who have participated in Sankofa before. Sankofa offers hands-on STEM learning that connects students to their heritage, their community, and the skills they need to thrive in tomorrow’s workforce.

If your child hasn’t joined us yet but is in 5th grade, we invite you to join our waitlist. We’ll let you know if additional spots open up to families new to our programs.

Can my child participate in STEM Scholars if they do not go to one of those schools?

At this time, STEM Scholars is only available to students who attend our partner schools.

However, if your school is interested in becoming one of our partner schools, please have a person in charge of making decisions reach out to [email protected]

Can my child participate in more than one program?

Yes! Your child can be part of more than one STEM Greenhouse program. For example, they might join STEM Scholars during the school year and Sankofa STEM Academy in the summer. We love seeing students stay involved and keep learning with us.

How much does it cost to participate in Kids Count, STEM Scholars, or STEM Scholars or Sankofa STEM Academy?

Our educational opportunities and programs will always be free for students at our partner schools and students who receive free or reduced lunch. For questions about the cost to students not meeting either of those qualifications, please contact us.

What does “Sankofa” mean?

The word Sankofa comes from Ghana, and it’s often tied to the proverb,
“Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi.”
“It is not wrong to go back for that which you know you have forgotten.”

We carry that wisdom in our work. To move forward, our students must know where they come from.

Many of our scholars come from communities rich with science, math, and innovation histories, even if those stories aren’t always taught in school. That legacy belongs to them, and we are honored to help them retrieve it.

How can I support STEM Greenhouse’s work?

It takes a whole village to make this work possible. You can support STEM Greenhouse by donating, partnering with us, or simply spreading the word.

Every gift, connection, and volunteer hour helps us reach more students and continue building STEM opportunities. Contact us to learn how you can be part of our village.

What’s the difference between STEM Scholars and STEM Scholars 2.0?

STEM Scholars is a biweekly afterschool program for middle school students that focuses on building strong math and science skills through hands-on learning, academic support, and meaningful relationships.

STEM Scholars 2.0 is a wraparound program for high school students, currently offered only at Innovation Central High School. It supports every part of a student’s journey, providing in-school math and science curriculum specialists, connecting teachers through Professional Learning Communities, helping families navigate college applications, and offering tutoring, mentoring, and more. The goal is to build academic strength, develop leadership, and prepare students for college, careers, and beyond.
