Kids Count
the power of early math support
One semester of twice-weekly after-school sessions boosted 8 – 11-year-olds’ math skills by ≈12% average, bringing them up from below-grade level to meeting 3rd-grade standards.
Img Description: “Kids Count impacted my life because it keeps me motivated by all the fun learning activities they have and [field] trips. Another [reason] is because I can be myself for example I can share something without being [laughed] at / or feel embarassed.”
Kids Count leverages the power of early intervention to address critical gaps in math education. Despite nearly three-quarters of the students starting the program in 4th or 5th grade, the majority of students still struggle with foundational 3rd-grade math skills.
Research has shown strong connections between early mathematical skills and later academic achievement (Duncan), and between elementary math proficiency and high school success (Siegler).
With a curriculum developed to address these skill gaps, Kids Count introduces and reinforces math topics, leveraging biweekly meetings, games, and hands-on activities.
Kicking off each session with a wellness checkin and BSA activity, our teachers connect with each student encouraging self-care, reflection, and other critical social-emotional skills necessary for lifelong success.
